I am really impressed with the latest Dr. Who episode, “Heaven Sent.” I suspect that much of the brilliant writing and well stated sources of the writer Steven Moffatt will go over the heads of many of the Dr. Who regulars in a similar way to how “Vanilla Sky” caused similar confusion 14 years ago. Esoteric philosophical subjects can only be presented in a subtle way if they are to be effective … and by effective I mean getting people talking and discussing what it all meant. In this respect Moffatt is very successful. However the hour long episode is powerful evidence of what a great actor Peter Capaldi is. I remember three years ago meeting up with the movie producer/scriptwriter Tony Grisoni. Tony had contacted me after reading ITLAD. We discussed in detail how our mutuial interests overlapped (for example the writings of Philip K. Dick.) I discussed my favourite movies and these included some that Tony had been directly involved in (for example “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” with the famous DMT scene in the bar). Tony mentioned to me that he was really proad of his short films … one of these, “Syncing” (wonderful pun) is a similar Peter Capaldi vehicle to “Heaven Sent.” This is well worth watching if you have never seen it …. https://vimeo.com/22430175
