How a Surfer Dude Stunned the World of Science ...

Quantum physics deals with the science of the very small - the very building blocks of matter. However over the last ninety or so years this obscure area of research has shown that the universe is a far stranger place than anybody could imagine. Everything we perceive around us is built of waves of probability and particles that zip in and out of existence. However ITLAD/CTF suggests that it is within this area of research that the very nature of conciousness itself may be understood. Can this be correct? Join in the debate here.

How a Surfer Dude Stunned the World of Science With the 'Theory of Everything'

I found this rather interesting, not that I think this person is some bum or just a surfer dude.

The inspiration behind Lisi's model is something you can actually see. It’s the most elegant and intricate shape known to mathematics, called E8 – an eight-dimensional mathematical pattern with 248 points first found in 1887. The pattern was only fully understood by mathematicians this year after workings, that, if written out in tiny print, would cover an area the size of Manhattan.

E8 encapsulates the symmetries of a geometric object that is 57-dimensional and is itself is 248-dimensional. Lisi said, "I think our universe is this beautiful shape."

What makes E8 so exciting is that Nature also seems to have embedded it at the heart of many bits of physics. One interpretation of why we have such a quirky list of fundamental particles is because they all result from different facets of the strange symmetries of E8.

Lisi's breakthrough came when he noticed that some of the equations describing E8's structure matched his own. "My brain exploded with the implications and the beauty of the thing," he tells New Scientist. "I thought: 'Holy crap, that's it!'"

What Lisi had realized was that he could find a way to place the various elementary particles and forces on E8's 248 points. What remained were 20 gaps, which he filled with notional particles, for example those that some physicists predict to be associated with gravity.

YouAreDreaming: Ian, yes, Lisi has been mentioned before on FORUM:

FORUM: Large Hadron Colider [by Karl L Le Marcs]

And I also recall some discussion on BLOG from last year. I have written on the E8 theory previously, away from ITLAD, and would suggest, if you are interested in Lisi's ideas, to check out the ideas of Rob Bryanton (author of Imagining The Tenth Dimension) as well. Contrasting but thought-provoking!

It is very interesting. I wasn't sure if his work has been brought up here as of yet. Not surprised that you are already on top of it :D You are like a walking library of vast knowledge and information. I enjoy reading new theories when they come to my attention, but still for the most part playing catchup in a very large world of physics.

If you're REALLY interested, read the book "Imagining The Tenth Dimension" and then follow Rob Bryanton's BLOG (I do) :D

Yes, I know! I just linked to the BLOG above ! :D

And "Bog Spot" ?
*giggles*
That means something funny in a very infantile way in the UK :D

Anyway......let's drag this back to the topic shall we?? :D :ugeek:

It's not a fundamental question to me, Cam. For instance, Who is the "I" asking the question? What does it mean to "engage life well"? There is a branch of Philosophy named "ETHICS" which you may be interested in reading. Does morality have objective reality or is it all merely subjective? Is your utopian ideal of a life engaged well, your subjective ideal or an objective goal? I like to get you thinking!! :D

Aloha everyone

what a great topic! and here you are hiding all your posts about reality and Shamans in the QP section you rascals!

So what you're really saying Karl is that reality is really only $ex and beer and everything else is an illusion!?

Gary

PS Oh and by the way Karl I may have to visit Bury St Edmunds in May, is there anything I can bring back for you? *grins*
*Can you work out what that may be everyone?*
