Martin: Re - The Time Traveller's Wife

Of course you know who wrote the script -- Bruce Joel Rubin who also wrote Jacob's Ladder and Ghost. You may remember how significant his work was for me.

Mr. Rubin also is a Kundalini Yoga teacher and gives talks here http://www.brucerubin-class.com/2011.aspx

I love his earnest spiritual-seeking and honesty, and often listen to the talks.

I thought the film was very romantic; I can't speak to how it compared to the book.

Martin & other forum members:

I saw "The Rabbit Hole" with Nicole Kidman, and for anyone who has experienced loss (or not) this is a brilliant movie. What might interest forum members is that the character Nicole plays, bristles at talk of God as a comfort in her loss, but looks turns to the idea of Parallel Universes and a bond with the young man who accidently struck down her son as a source of some comfort. I and some other members of the forum might identify one's own response in her behaviour. I highly recommend the film; absolutely wonderful performances, and the dialogue is superb.

Hi Ruth, hope you're well.

Yes, I saw this film a few months back. Was a fairly tough watch with some strong performances from Kidman and Aaran Eckheart (who is a fantastic actor). I think I may have been doing something while half watching the film because I couldn't really get into it too much. I do remember the bond with the boy though and the comics he made about the parallel universes. Essentially it is a film about loss and seemed to be focused on that soley, it is therefore difficult to watch if you don't have any experience of a smilar kind to draw upon in that there isn't a great else going on in the film (from what I remember!)

Anyway...! Saw 50/50 last night, wonderfully moving film about cancer.

Been a difficult year for a lot of people, myself particularly. Hopefully better things are on the horizon in 2012.

Hope you're well Ruth. ;)

I'm doing well Martin. I'm sorry to hear things could be better for you.

I'm glad you couldn't relate that well to the film (as I wouldn't wish the alternative), but there may be a few members who might. There were some funny bits, however, -- Kidman asking the woman why god didn't just make another angel, and Sandra Oh and Eckhart getting the giggles inappropriately after smoking some pot. Also I loved the dynamics amongst Kidman and her mother and sister. It felt very real to me. It also felt very precious to me as they captured so much of my own experience, but it was subtle and I agree you may have had to live it to understand it. The interesting thing though for forum members is that I think is that the boy and Kidman are being comforted by science theory rather than by religious beliefs. I think this would be a first in film. Goes to show one how strongly this theory is grabbing the popular imagination.

Hi Ruth,

Great to hear from you. I have not seen the movie but I did read the book and really enjoyed it. It is profoundly itladian. Indeed I was so intrigued by the plot line that I contacted the author, Audrey Niffenegger. Audrey and I swapped a few emails and I know that she has checked out this Forum once or twice. We also discussed the similarities between her plot-line and my ITLAD/CTF model.

I am so pleased to see you still on the Forum after all these years. I felt that our meeting in New York was all too short but maybe next time we will all have time to chat for even longer .... and maybe inaugurate the first New York (or Toronto) Walker Group .....

Best Wishes

Tony

The other night I watched 127 hours starring James Franco. It is the true story of Aron Ralston who was trapped in the Utah canyon and manages to free himself and survive to write about his ordeal. As Aron remained trapped and his health failing, he hallucinated and saw himself playing with a young boy, and he also saw family and friends sitting on a couch looking at him. At the end of the film, the director posted a note saying Aron's premonition came true. I wasn't sure what that meant and so I searched for more info and realized what was being said. Aron saw his future interaction with his son and it was seeing that interaction with the son that motivated him to take drastic measures to escape his predicament. There was a part of this film which I could not watch but I did find it was worthwhile to stay with it, and appreciated that it supports Tony's hypothesis. James Franco was brilliant and it is great to see a young actor with so much promise.
