Martin,

A really interesting movie that is a cross between "Memento" and "Jacob's Ladder". Maybe the most itladian movie to date.

I look forward to your impressions and comments.

I went to the cinema Saturday with Laurel and caught a couple of films.

My last five girlfriends - A fairly brave English effort at High Fidelity. Parts of it were very funny, but ultimately the film's scrappy style of story telling becomes too much of a distraction. There is plenty of content for this to have been a brilliant film but it falls short slightly.

Shutter Island - Scorsese's latest effort and it's another brilliant film, the ol' Martin/Leo combo have done it again. The film is a rather dramatic blending of Anger Management and Identity. The score and atmosphere created is very creepy, it gives a good exploration into the many layers of mental illness and how we're all closer to it then we realise.

This evening, I'm going to try watching "Flatliners" with my ITLAD specs on. I haven't seen the movie in a few years, but given the subject matter, think that it may fit in here.

For those not in the know....
Keifer Sutherland and Julia Roberts star in this film about some medical students who are experimenting with the phenomena of near death experiences by killing and then resuscitating themselves in the laboratory. I'll post what I think about it later.
Sometimes I believe that this less material life is our truer life, and that our vain presence on the terraqueous globe is itself the secondary or merely virtual phenomenon.----------H.P. Lovecraft

Last night a few of us went to see Repo Men. On the surface a fairly average action movie, but there were a fair amount of ITLADian elements at work also.

The film is a futuristic film in which people are pressured into purchasing artificial organs to prolong their life. Unfortunately, payments are far too expensive for most people to afford and this results in the repo men coming to collect back their property. Without spoiling the plot too much for anyone that plans to see it. There were scenes which discussed Schrodinger's Cat, a past life review and the suspended life animation which is suggested in Vanilla Sky as well. Jude Law discussing these things in an action film isn't the most desirable of forums, but hey, whatever spreads the good word!

The film is actually quite disgusting in places with organs being ripped from people's bodies, so if you have a weak stomach I'd go prepared.

Martin,

How weird ..... I read the film title as being "Repo Man" not "Repo Men". I guess that is because I actually went to school with the director of the movie Repo Man, a guy called Alex Cox.

If anybody is interested "Repo Man" was Alex's second movie and was financied by ex Monkee Michael Nesmith. Alex then went on to direct a series of films including the (in)famous Sid And Nancy.

I really enjoyed "Repo Man" and although it has no itladian overtones it certainly is a fun movie. However Alex made a 55 minute TV adaption of Jorge Borges's Death & The Compass which was subsequently made into a feature film which came out in1996. Now this story is itladian (as is most of Borges's writing) in that one of its themes is Zeno's Paradox. Indeed the story has many elements of Quabbalastic philosophy as well.

I may try and source a copy of this film and discuss it with FORUM "lurker" and world-authority on the Quabbala, Professor Les Lancaster. Indeed if Alex reads this he will be no doubt amused that Les and I will probably meet to discuss the implications of his movie in a pub known as the Three Stags in Bebington.

Wow!

Repo Man is one of my favourite movies. I always thought that Alex Cox was Britain's answer to David Lynch (Mulholland Drive .... now there is an itladian movie!). Indeed I think the difference between Alex and Lynch is that Alex has a real sense of humour. Maybe it is because he is a scouser (or is that a "Wirralian"?) I also love the way in which his movies always refer to other movies. The fun is spotting the references.

I used to watch Videodrome a few years ago. I always found Alex's analysis of the latest movies really useful.

I have always thought that Alex must have had great fun directing the Clash and the other assorted "musos" in his fantastically shambolic, but nevertheless wonderful. movie Walker.

Anthony, any chance of getting Alex to join us on here?

I went to see Clash of the Titans last night. Not amazing. Too many weird accent changes and mentions of Argos. There was however a scene in which our warriors had to pay the Ferryman for the journey across to see medusa.

Clearly they hadn't read your book Tony....

I saw "American: The Bill Hicks Story" on Sunday which I'd highly recommend. I think he'd have loved ITLAD. He said so many profound things and had deep insights into life, the universe and everything. That he also died at the tragically young age of 32 is merely a coincidence.....

One of his most well-known quotes is as follows

Matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration
We're all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively
There's no such thing as death
Life is just a dream
And we are the imagination of ourselves
