what struck me most about the Solar System program last night was that it made me think about reality again.
Or more precisely, about how what we see is not really how it is 'out there'.
There was a part where he used a prism to split the light into its separate wavelengths.
He was talking about leaves absorbing most of the frequencies, and reflecting the green light (which is why we see them as green).
This is a great example of how we do not really see the leaf, but only the light reflected from it.
He was also wearing a bright red jumper and that was what really caught my eye.
That jumper is no more red than it is sky blue pink. it just soaks up all the other colours in the composite light and reflects some of the red band.

Mike,

As I recall this is exactly the point Anthony makes in his "Schindler's List" analogy in ITLAD. He asks us to ponder where the red exists when we watch the sequence with the little girl in the red dress (this part is the only colour in an otherwise black and white movie). It really made me think about the nature of perception and the way we "perceive" the external world depends upon what our senses tell us.

Ivan.

Is Everything We Know about the Universe Wrong?
There's something very odd going on in space - something that shouldn't be possible. It is as though vast swathes of the universe are being vacuumed up by a vast and unseen celestial vacuum cleaner. The accidental discovery of what is ominously being called 'dark flow' not only has implications for the destinies of large numbers of galaxies - it also means that large numbers of scientists might have to find a new way of understanding the universe.

Yup, you are quite right - that's probably why it resonates so well with me.

RE: Did cooking make us Human?

As usual with science, it asked the "how?" questions but avoided asking the obvious "why?" questions such as "why does cooked food taste better than raw?"

But it did explain why cooked food produces more energy than raw though.

Have tonight's programme set to record.

Spectacular! Such a fantastically produced programme with some very honest insights into science's understanding of the universe. If you don't understand something, just call it "Dark.....something"

I found the section which suggested that our universe is part of something bigger rather fascinating. It seemed very similar to a programme I watched a year or two ago that was discussing membranes and how our universe is just one of several sheets lined up in a big long row. Fascinating stuff.

Not only is everything we Know about the Universe wrong everything in life we are lead to believe in is wrong. It's all part of the big lie we live in called the Matrix. The powers that be know this, that is why we are all starting to question it more and more.

Another great installment from Professor Brian Cox, I agree with Marcs Chown about his style of presenting. He is so calm and relaxed, not too energetic and loud like so many other presenters now days. Last weeks epiosde was fantastic and this weeks focus on weather was a very nice follow up. Really love the way he pronounces SAT - URN!

Can't wait for next weeks.
